DOJO RULES
Dojo Check In Procedure
If you come for your first lesson, please come 15-20 minutes before the start of class to complete your registration.
Each student will be assigned a member number which they will give to the club representative whenever they come to train.
Upon entering the dojo, every student must check in at the reception and give their number. It is very important that students check in and enter their number as this allows us to keep accurate attendance records for testing purposes.
Students will then proceed to the locker rooms to either dress for class or put all personal belonging away while they attend class. No shoes, socks, coats, etc. are to be left in the waiting area.
Students must arrive for class ON TIME. It is suggested that you arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to your scheduled class time. This will allow time for check in and dressing. Students are to wait in the reception area until the dojo floor is cleared from the previous class.
There will be seating for the parents and others to watch class inside of the training area. This is a quiet seating area and the rules are strictly enforced. Those who wish to chat, have a drink, or watch other family members may make themselves comfortable in the reception area. We have a homework room where the children can study or amuse themselves in the reception area. Please be advised you are responsible for your children at all times.
Training Requirements
If you or your child have a medical condition, please make the instructor aware of this before class.
Membership dues must be current. If dues are not current, you will not be able to train or take a test.
Hand Pads/Leg Pads/Mouth Protection
- All children 7 years and up are required to have hand, leg and mouth protection available for all classes.
- All children 4 years and up are required to have hand protection for all classes.
- Adults should have forearm protection and thigh pads.
This equipment should be brought to each class and will be used as dictated by the instructor. It is recommended you mark your child's equipment with a permanent marker.
Dojo Etiquette
- No smoking, horse-play, loud talk, or foul language in any part of the dojo.
- Bow when entering or leaving the work-out area.
- Keep fingernails and toenails short; do not wear watches and jewelry during class.
- Always address your instructor in the dojo using the term "SENSEI" or the appropriate "Mr." or "Ms." and the instructor's last name.
- During class, respond quickly to instructions without hesitation and never argue with your instructor.
- Show enthusiasm, spirit, and good sportsmanship at all times.
- Always wear your complete gi unless specified otherwise by the sensei and wash your gi regularly.
- When working with others, always start and end with a bow.
- If you arrive late for class, step up to the training floor, bow, and wait for the instructor to signal to you to enter the class. If you must leave early, please notify the instructor prior to the start of class.
Dojo Etiquette - Members, Parents, and Spectators
- When there is bad weather, please call the dojo to find out if there are classes.
- Please maintain quiet in the spectator area by the dojo training area. Noise distracts the instructors and students and prevents
maximum benefit from the classes.
- Parents are responsible for their children at all times when at the facility. Leaving students unattended during class time under
direction of a certified club instructor is permissible. Spectators and non-member children must be accompanied by an adult at all
times. Children in the homework room must have a parent or guardian present on the premises.
Japanese Terminology Sheet
You will receive a list of the most common Japanese terminology used in the program.
Syllabus/Testing Requirements
The syllabus lists all requirements the students must perform for each belt advancement. The students usually test on a 3 to 4 month interval, depending on their progress during this period. The students will receive a letter in the mail regarding their eligibility to test. For children, this letter has a section that must be filled in by their parents and teachers and returned one week prior to testing.
Please check the bulletin board or website for testing dates and times. On these evenings there will be no regular karate classes scheduled.
Other Things You Will Need to Get Started
With your introduction pack you will receive a DVD that shows the first few kata students will be taught (Taikyoku Shodan, Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan, Heian Godan, Tekki). This enables the students to practice at home to reinforce the instruction they receive in class.
Children's Book (Facing the Double Edge Sword)
Our children's program is based on the principle of resolving conflict without resorting to violence. This book correlates well with our program and the children are required to read one chapter prior to each test. Chapter 10 should be read by new students. Subsequent chapters for each belt level are found in the Syllabus, which is also enclosed. The students will discuss each chapter with the instructors at their belt test.
Adult Book (Kyusho Secrets)
This book correlates well with our program and the students are required to read one chapter prior to each test. Refer to the syllabus for reading assignments for new students. The students will discuss each chapter with the instructors at their belt test.
